Should yoga pants be banned?

25 Sep

Within the last month, there has been a controversy whether or not yoga pants should be allowed in public schools for normal every day attire.  Tartan Senior High School along with other schools in the ISD 622 district, have been debating whether or not it is time to revise the dress code policies.  This situation is affecting the students and their parents, and recently it has made its way to the school board.

It seems to be quite common for teens and parents to disagree when it comes to what is appropriate to wear and what is not.  Some parents may see what their kids are wearing as too revealing or too tight.  In other words, they don’t want their teens to have the reputation of being a slut because of what they wear.

As you all know, yoga pants have recently entered the fashion world within the last few years.  They are worn by all types of people for all different occasions.  Some wear them as work out attire, others as a way to be comfortable and lazy.  There are also the girls that wear them if they want to be comfortable yet cute.

So what’s the debate about wearing yoga pants to school? Well parents and even some students believe that it is inappropriate and it sends the wrong message to their peers.  Yoga pants seem to be a distraction in the classroom because guys focus on the body that is wearing the yoga pants rather than the teacher.  Parents and some students claim that yoga pants send off too strong of  a sexual message and that you should not be showing off your body in that way while attending school.  Majority of the students however, don’t see what the problem is.  If you go to a public school, you should be able to wear them. Needless to say, this has caused a lot of commotion between adults and teens.

Now the question is, will schools start revising the dress code policies and limit the wear of when yoga pants can be worn? Or, will they ignore and move on from the controversy and just let the yoga pant trend die down over time? I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Ha I think this is crazy. I looked further into this and were reading some other comments from parent’s saying “high school is teaching you the real world and you do not wear yoga pants at work.” My instant reaction back was, college teaches you how to excel in a higher profession and yet we have students who show up in their star wars pajamas. I don’t believe schools should be banning any type of clothing unless it’s you wear no clothing at all because then that really is distracting. High school is where teenagers start to find themselves and reaching into different parts of fashion is an aspect of that.

However; yoga pants are a privilege, not a right.

I think this is a little bit ridiculous that parents are getting involved. What people wear won’t matter to the kids who are actually going to school to get an education. Yes it may be sending the wrong message but I beleive that people should be able to wear what they want. I am from a high school where all the girls wear either camo or yoga pants and its not as much to be sexual as it is to just be comfy.

I giggled when I saw the title. So many girls, including me, at my high school wore yoga pants. Some everyday. Seriously. There was a girl in yearbook who literally wore them EVERYDAY. Which was fine, they were comfortable. When an issue like this arrises and high school students are threatened with an idea like banning yoga pants, and they react negatively, or act like they don’t understand when they actually do, what are teachers going to do? Tell themselves that they’re right because……they are. I feel like there might be two sides to this: the guys need to calm down and pay attention, like that will happen; and do you see the influences and examples society puts out for girls? We constantly feel the need to show off our assets because we think that will get attention from guys, which is the MOST important thing ever, huh? But neither of those things will change. Not until the world changes. Parents and teachers will have to endure it until the fad ends. Or yoga pants suddenly become not as comfy.

If schools are going to start banning yoga pants, then they need to start banning skinny jeans, jeggings, leggings, skirts, and dresses, because let’s be honest, yoga pants aren’t the only things that can be viewed as being “too sexual” in school. Besides, if guys want to look at girls, then banning yoga pants alone isn’t going to stop them. Even more so, if parents don’t want their kids wearing these clothes, then there is a simple solution – don’t buy them or just don’t allow them to wear them. They’re the parents, if they don’t want their kids to do something, it starts with them saying no first. And for the parents that think that high school is preparing everyone for the real world and “you don’t wear yoga pants at work,” then you better start banning sweatpants, t-shirts, and all those clothes because more than likely, you don’t wear those to work either! If school administrations are going to start banning one specific kind of clothing, then they need to start banning a heck of a lot more to maintain their arguments on why they believe this is necessary.
